Head Coach:  Mike Romeo (mromeo@whschool.org) has been appointed as the head coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in the spring of 2014.

Romeo brings a wealth of soccer coaching experience to the program, including an 11-year stint as head coach of the boys’ varsity team at the private, co-educational independent school. Romeo currently serves as an assistant on the Rutgers University men’s soccer coaching staff, a post he has held since 2011. Romeo replaces longtime coach Jackie MacLean and inherits a very successful team, which he hopes to elevate to the elite class in Central Jersey.

“They’ve been very successful with wins and losses but we want to take this program to new heights,” said Romeo, who twice was named Coach of the Year by local newspapers during his tenure as W-H boys’ head coach. “Jackie has done a great job with this team. Our goal is to reach an even higher level in everything we do.”

During his coaching career, Romeo has been successful in mentoring teams at many levels. He has more than 25 years of coaching experience with particular expertise in goalkeeper training. He has helped develop many NCAA Division 1 players and guided teams to more than 40 championships in league and cup competition.    Before joining the Wardlaw-Hartridge coaching staff in 2000, he was an Assistant Varsity Coach at St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen from 1984 to 1989. Coach Romeo joined the professional coaching ranks in 1990 as the Goalkeeping Coach for the Penn-Jersey Spirit of the American Professional Soccer League. He later served as the General Manager and Assistant Coach of the United Soccer League's (USL) Central Jersey Riptide in 1998 before becoming Head Coach of the USL's New Brunswick Brigade in 2000. Both clubs were minor league affiliates of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. From 1992 to 1998, he was the Head Coach of the North Brunswick Rovers, one of the state's most successful youth soccer clubs. Under Coach Romeo, the Rovers were four-time winners of the NJYSA State Cup. In 1997, he led the Rovers to the USYSA Region I Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. Currently, Coach Romeo is the Director of Goalkeeper Training at the prestigious Players Development Academy (PDA) in Zarephath, NJ. He is also a staff coach for PDA's Nike/US Soccer National Development Academy.
