Juniors Meet with College Admissions Pro
Posted 03/12/2020 07:58AM

Dr. Bob Massa, an admission executive with 45 years of experience in higher education, made an informative and interactive presentation to juniors on March 6 in the Berry Performing Arts Center.

A former colleague of Chris Teare, W+H Director of College Counseling, Dr. Massa began by sharing some reassuring data about the large number of colleges and universities with favorable admission numbers. However, he also pointed out that students will find it more challenging to gain admission to the most selective and competitive schools.

Other topics addressed included the importance of character and non-academic factors in college admissions and the role of essays as a way for students to tell stories that reveal who they are and what they truly value. Dr. Massa told students that colleges are not only looking for what students will “take” in terms of courses, but for what students will “bring” to their residential communities.

Dr. Massa retired last year as the Senior Vice President of Enrollment and Institutional Planning at Drew University. He previously worked as Chief Enrollment Officer at Johns Hopkins University and is Vice President Emeritus for Enrollment and College Relations at Dickinson College. He’s also worked in various capacities at Lafayette College, Trinity University and Union College during his career. He currently serves as chair of the Character Collaborative, works as an adjunct professor for USC and is an enrollment consultant.

To conclude his presentation, Dr. Massa invited a handful of juniors to join him for mock interviews in which he acted as the college admission representative.
