Upper School Merit & Achievement Scholarships 

The Wardlaw+Hartridge School offers two $12,500 merit scholarships and two achievement awards to qualifying incoming ninth grade applicants. An internal Scholarship Committee will select the students as scholarship and award recipients based on the following criteria:

Merit:

  • Students must have maintained a GPA of A- or above in grade 7 and grade 8.
  • Students’ ISEE score average must be in the 7th stanine or above for independent school norms or above the 75% percentile.
  • Students must exemplify strong character.
  • Finalist candidates for the Merit Scholarship will be invited to W+H to write an essay from assigned prompts and interview with the Scholarship Committee.

Achievement:

  • Students must have maintained a GPA of B or above in grade 7 and grade 8.
  • Students’ ISEE scores will be considered.
  • Students must exhibit strong talent and leadership outside the classroom in the arts, athletics, or other extra-curricular activities. They must have a coach or extracurricular activity leader write a letter of recommendation reflecting that student’s particular strengths, interests and achievements to demonstrate strong character and extracurricular involvement.
  • Students may submit supplementary materials including an athletic highlight video, a musical performance video, or an electronic art or writing portfolio to exemplify the student’s high level of achievement in a specific area of interest.

Candidates who meet the criteria above will be invited to W+H as Scholarship Award finalists and will write an essay from assigned prompts and interview with the Scholarship Committee.

J.C. Kellogg Foundation
Sixth Grade Scholarship

The Wardlaw + Hartridge School is pleased to offer one $12,500 merit scholarship to a qualifying incoming sixth grade applicant. The award is funded in part by a grant from the J.C. Kellogg Foundation. An internal Scholarship Committee will select the student as a scholarship and award recipient based on the following criteria:

  • Students must reside in Elizabeth or Plainfield, NJ.
  • Students must be applying for sixth grade admission.
  • Students must possess an exemplary academic record.
  • Students must exhibit strong talent and leadership outside the classroom in the arts, athletics, or other extracurricular activities. They must have a coach or extracurricular activity leader write a letter of recommendation reflecting that student’s particular strengths, interests and achievements to demonstrate strong character and extracurricular involvement.
  •  Students may submit supplementary materials including an athletic highlight video, a musical performance video, or an electronic art or writing portfolio to exemplify the student’s high level of achievement in a specific area of interest.

The Barbara Husted Integrity Award

  • Given annually to a student entering The Wardlaw+Hartridge School between grades 6 and 9.
  • Applicants will be asked to write a letter reflecting on a time that they had to choose a course of action that reflects integrity.
  • The amount of the award will be 50% of tuition and the award winner will receive the award annually through graduation or departure from the school, assuming they remain in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Students who demonstrate financial need in excess of 50% of tuition may apply for additional need-based aid through the school’s financial aid process.

All scholarship candidates must take the ISEE or SSAT exam by Saturday, January 28, 2023.

Please note that families of academic scholarship or achievement award recipients will be notified when they receive their admission letter. These awards are not need-based, and scholarship or achievement award winners may also qualify for need-based aid.
