| A MESSAGE FROM OUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Karl Miran, Athletic Director, reflects on his 45 Years Following the Bouncing Ball, including the past 10 years at Wardlaw+Hartridge, in his May blog post. Below is an excerpt: In order to make sense of my career in athletics and education, I need to start with two men who set me on my way. I never consciously strove to "be like" John Colman (my high school coach) or Mickey Heinecken (my college coach), but playing for the football programs they built led me to think that sports was a better use of my time than law, medicine, business, or the priesthood….45 years later, here I am. | GIRLS CAPTURE TWO MORE GOLF TITLES The W+H girls' golf team continued its march to perfection by repeating as Central Jersey sectional champions Monday at Stanton Ridge Golf and Country Club and as Greater Middlesex County champs Wednesday at Concordia Golf Club. W+H defeated runner-up Bridgewater-Raritan by 24 strokes in the sectionals. Sarah Shao '24 and Claire Lu '24 each shot 77 to finish tied for third in the individual standings and all five W+H players finished in the top 16 overall at the sectionals. Tanya Chowdary '24 (80) placed 10th, Jenelle Valera '22 (84) finished 13th and Ava Choi '25 (88) was 16th. The Rams also repeated as GMC champions in Wednesday's county tournament. Claire Lu shot an even-par round of 35 to take top honors in the individual standings, while teammates Sarah Shao and Jenelle Valera each fired rounds of 36 to complete a sweep of the top three. Ava Choi (38) and Tanya Chowdary (41) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, to complete a stellar team performance. W+H's team score of 145 placed comfortably ahead of runner-up South Brunswick (168) in the team standings. The Rams will seek to continue their perfect season at the New Jersey State Championships at Raritan Valley Country Club on May 16 and State Prep Championships at The Peddie School on May 20. |

SENIORS SHARE IMPRESSIVE RESEARCH IN DELIVERY OF CAPSTONE PRESENTATIONS Twenty-three seniors in the Class of 2022 recently shared their research and findings on a variety of pertinent topics in Capstone presentations in the Oakwood Room. This project, a requirement to graduate with the Global Scholars Program diploma, involves many components including a written paper, action research and a presentation in front of students and a panel of teachers. The Capstone Research Seminar supported 23 young scholars through their first original research projects. That journey takes students through many sophisticated research techniques: they form research questions on issues of their choosing, they form their own definitions of key concepts based on the current knowledge in their fields, and they answer their questions with original data collected through interviews, observations, and primary source analyses. It's real, high-quality scholarship akin to what their future professors do day-in and day-out. Read full story here CAPSTONE PHOTO GALLERY

GURINDER SINGH '22 EARNS CITIZEN AWARD Gurinder Singh '22 was among three local high school seniors to receive Good Citizen Awards from The Westfield Chapter of The Daughters of The American Revolution (DAR). Each school selected one Good Citizen from their senior class based on Dependability (truthfulness, loyalty, punctuality), Service (cooperation, courtesy, consideration of others), Leadership (personality, self-control, responsibility), and Patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation). DAR members Barbara Benko, Lisa Kane and Victoria Freeman, a W+H alumna from the Class of 1992, presented Gurinder with a DAR Good Citizen Certificate, pin and wallet card in the W+H front courtyard on May 10. Each winner also received a $100 cash prize donated by the Westfield DAR Chapter. Read full story here

SENIORS RECEIVE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS Wardlaw+Hartridge athletes and teams often receive recognition for outstanding sportsmanship. Earlier this spring, W+H seniors Zain Zaidi '22 and Izabel Korycki '22 represented the school at the 21st Annual Greater Middlesex Conference Sportsmanship Banquet. Zain and Izabel were selected as the W+H recipients and honored along with student athletes from 35 schools in Middlesex County. They also accepted the GMC Gold Division's Team Sportsmanship Award, which was presented to the W+H athletic program. Other team divisional winners were J.P. Stevens (Red), Carteret (White) and Mother Seton (Blue). The W+H honorees embody the philosophy printed on the event program, a quote from former tennis star Jim Courier: "Sportsmanship for me is when a guy walks off the court and you can't tell whether he won or lost, when he carries himself with pride either way."

UPPER SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Karl Miran, Athletic Director, announced this week's Upper School Athletes of the Week at the divisional meeting. Congratulations to baseball player Charlie Silver '24 and tennis player Aadithya Srinivasan '24. There's an old saying is that "Pitching is 75% of baseball." Not only is pitching a high-level skill, but it can be grueling, and high school teams rarely have "enough" pitching, so it was especially good news for the Rams that Charlie pitched his first inning of varsity baseball, throwing a scoreless inning against Piscataway Tech on Thursday. Aadithya's notable improvement from last year has moved him up the boys' tennis challenge roster and put him in the position of filling in at third singles on varsity for the first time. In a division match, and with encouragement from his teammates on the sidelines, the sophomore earned success. His straight-sets win helped the Rams secure a win over Spotswood. Honorable mention goes to track and field athlete Nate Bravo '23. Although the rules don't allow an athlete to be named Athlete of the Week twice in one season, that doesn't stop us from honoring further improvement by our students. Last week, Nate ran a couple excellent times a 23.3 leg in the 4x200 and a 52.75 in the 4x400 at the GMC relays.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Karl Miran, Athletic Director, announced this week's Middle School Athletes of the Week at the divisional meeting. Congratulations to softball player Emily O'Neill '27, tennis player Raj Gandhi '29 and track athlete Duaa Noor '27. Emily has shown steady improvement during her softball career, but her hard work is really paying off this season. When she is on the field, she has the ability to focus totally on the task at hand. Another thing that makes her a valuable teammate is her willingness to help a teammate or make sure the equipment gets put away. In the team's limited game schedule so far, Emily has been one of leaders at the plate, where she is 2-for-3. Raj demonstrates both enthusiasm and talent. His dedication seems to come from a genuine love of tennis. For the good of the team, he has adjusted to a variety of doubles partners and positions. His consistency is remarkable; he plays the first point of a match and the last point of the match with the same intensity and drive, regardless of the score and he never gives up. Duaa is a veteran cross country runner who this year decided to run distance with the track team. In her last two 1600-meter races, Duaa lowered her personal best each time. Last Tuesday at Perth Amboy, she knocked off 12 seconds for a time of 6:52. In doing so, Duaa became only the seventh-grade girl in Middle School history to run the 1600 meters in under seven minutes.
