The Wardlaw+Hartridge Upper School provides the final stage in preparing high school students to succeed in an array of college programs, most especially those which are elite, challenging academic settings. At the same time, the Upper School goes beyond a narrow concept of college preparation and educates our students in the broadest sense of the term. Our aim is that students will possess the qualities - intellectual, aesthetic, social, and more - that are necessary for an individual to achieve his or her potential in today’s globally interconnected landscape. The Upper School continues the school’s offerings of small school intimacy combined with numerous opportunities for leadership. Through a wide range of activities, academic, and athletic choices, we encourage students to participate actively and engage fully in an exciting four-year journey of self-discovery and expression.
The Upper School provides a wide selection of college preparatory courses for our high schoolers, including honors and advanced placement courses. Our faculty nurture open, trusting relationships with students, and foster an atmosphere where stimulating intellectual discourse fills classrooms and hallways, and assumptions are challenged daily. Encouraging students to wrestle with complexity, extend their understanding of nuance, and refine their sense of self is at the core of the Upper School’s commitment to intellectual excellence.
In all that we do, the Upper School seeks to promote the moral growth of our students by maintaining an environment in which the qualities of kindness, civility, integrity, and respect not only are encouraged but also are put into practice every single day. Students graduate The Wardlaw+Hartridge School, knowing how to meet deadlines and produce sophisticated work, understanding how to have meaningful relationships, knowing how to take full advantage of the resources around them, expecting to be engaged in their environments, and prepared to play active roles in their lives and their communities for the rest of their lives. This is what makes us a top private high school and prep school not only is Middlesex County but in New Jersey and beyond.
