Initiatives and Excitement for the School Year Ahead
Erin Leonard

Welcome back to W+H School for our returning families and an extra special welcome to our many new families!

The Lower School teachers, staff and I are thrilled with the start of our new school year. The deep engagement, fun-filled playground time, collaborative opportunities to learn and routines are being implemented daily.

We are very proud of our enrollment this year with 125 students in the Lower School. They each bring a diversity of thought, love for learning and willingness to try their best each and every day. To witness their anticipation in learning and the magic of wonder is a treasure for our Lower School Team.

The themes for the year continue to be our emphasis on academic progress along with the highly important social-emotional focus on community building. Our Core Value for the month of September is Community. We feel strongly that children need to feel safe, engaged and have a sense of belonging to truly shine academically. Our Lower School Team is committed to our community of learners.

Our first Lower School Assembly took place on Friday, September 19 in the PAC at 8:30 a.m. We were highly impressed with our four fifth grade Honor Guards leading the assembly and Mrs. Howell’s first grade class sang the song, “Community” with dance movements incorporated to highlight our deeply embedded Core Value of Community. Thank you, Mrs. Junod, for your expert dance instruction, too!

Another theme for the year is more hands-on science implementation, especially in the Early Childhood Program of Pre-K(3), JK(4), and Kindergarten classrooms. We are implementing the Texas A&M’s Junior Master Gardener program in order for every child in the Early Childhood program to be certified as a Junior Master Gardener in June 2025. Our Lower School Garden will be abuzz with activity this fall, spring and summer! The sense of community in caring for our Lower School Garden will be highlighted.

Thanks to all of you for the support of our Lower School teachers and staff, collaborative spirit and continued ongoing communication as we build strong relationships this year.
