W+H Students Celebrate Lunar New Year

Rudy Brandl

This year’s Lunar New Year festivities took on a different look but retained the festive atmosphere of the annual school tradition. The event took place Friday, Feb. 12 in the Berry Performing Arts Center in front of a small socially distanced audience but was viewed by others at school on a livestream.

Juniors and seniors entered the PAC and received a red mask while music played. Brian Machado ’21 began the performance with an electrifying dragon dance, followed by a welcome introduction by Neil Shah ’21 and Camila Martinez ’21. Izabel Korycki ’22 and Krishna Patel ’22 performed a beautiful fan dance.

Other performances were displayed on video – a piano and vocal of the Happy New Year song by John Papetti III ’21 and a recitation of The Spring Poem by Ananya Murlidharan ’22.

Leila Hernandez-Webster ’21 and Jason Kisare ’21 hosted the first trivia contest, won by Aastha Patel ’23, while Taliyah Williams ’21 and Sara Reiss ’21 ran the second trivia game, won by Izabel Korycki ’22.

International students shared a video of the song Chasing Dream, which featured vocal performances by W+H students all over the world. The event hosts and performers led the audience in a festive group dance to end the celebration. All students received an Ox keychain upon departure, a fitting and symbolic conclusion to a commemoration of the Year of the Ox.
