The Wardlaw+Hartridge School is proud to announce the appointment of John Gardner as the new head coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team. Coach Gardner brings decades of experience to the program, including successful tenures leading varsity teams at Bernards and Whippany Park High Schools and extensive work with youth programs such as the Westfield Soccer Association and Union County Football Club. A veteran coach with more than 2,000 wins at the club level, Gardner is known for his player-centered approach, dedication to development and lifelong passion for the game.
“Taking over the Wardlaw+Hartridge girls’ soccer program excites me as I’m getting back into coaching at the high school level for the first time since 1998,” Gardner said. “My goal this season is to build camaraderie among our players, because teamwork is the essence of life, and to use this year as a springboard to make the program a powerhouse within the GMC.”
Gardner’s coaching philosophy reflects his deep respect for sportsmanship and personal growth, guided by his favorite Grantland Rice quote: “When the One Great Scorer comes to mark upon your name, He writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game.” His approach emphasizes the T.I.P.S. model – technique, insight, personality and speed – developed “100%, 100% of the time.” In addition to coaching, Gardner is completing a forthcoming book titled Advice for My Daughters and Those I’ve Coached, underscoring his lifelong commitment to mentoring young athletes both on and off the field
“I could not be happier with the selection of John Gardner as our girls’ varsity soccer head coach,” W+H athletic director Mike Romeo said. “Coach Gardner has been exactly what this team has needed. After graduating seven seniors, this year’s team is rebuilding. Coach Gardner brings a wealth of experience and a thoughtful approach to team management. I like that he’s a teacher at heart, dedicated to developing character, teamwork and ambition in every player.”
