Third Graders Share Memoirs with Community

Rudy Brandl '83

Third grade students in the class of Ms. Katherine Heiss proudly shared their memoirs with an audience of parents, faculty and friends during a special presentation in Lower Snowdon on Friday, March 13.

As part of their memoir unit, the students read a variety of texts and began by writing mini memoirs before developing their final pieces. They focused on capturing meaningful moments from their own lives, selecting topics they felt strongly about while incorporating lessons on similes, alliteration, metaphors, onomatopoeia and expanding sentences.

Each memoir was a true story told in the first person and reflected the author’s own thoughts and feelings. The finished pieces also included illustrations and a concluding note about the author, making the event a wonderful showcase of both writing skills and personal expression.

Following the presentation, families and guests gathered in the third grade classroom for a reception celebrating the students’ hard work, creativity and growth as writers.
