Lower School Assembly Celebrates Abstract Art

Rudy Brandl '83

Mrs. Sara McDermott, Lower School art teacher, led Kindergarten and fifth grade students in a presentation titled Abstract Art: How Artists Show Feelings at the Lower School Assembly on Friday, March 13 in the Berry Performing Arts Center. After sharing some details about the project, Mrs. McDermott invited the students on stage to share their work.

The Kindergarten artists recently explored different types of abstract art and the ways artists get inspired to create. Through the children's book, Nico Draws a Feeling, by Bob Raczka, students learned about using line, shape and color to express an emotion. As a final project, Kindergarteners created an abstract artwork to present to their fifth grade buddies, considering colors and imagery that represented their relationship. They also participated in a video teaching all about abstract art, which included a slideshow of their expressive masterpieces.
