Hispanic Latinx Alliance Celebrates HHM Food Theme

Rudy Brandl '83

Members of the Upper School’s Hispanic Latinx Alliance shared presentations at division meetings last week to educate students, teachers and friends about Hispanic Heritage Month. Embracing this year’s theme of food, the HLA members spoke about El Sabor de Nuestra Herencia.

HLA members Nijiany Genao ’26, Giannalise Rodriguez ’26 and Mackias Ysaac ’26 began by addressing why Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. They explained that several Latin American countries including Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala celebrate independence within the range of these dates. They mentioned three reasons celebrating HHM is important: recognize important contributions, celebrate culture and diversity and build respect and understanding.

Students attending the presentations were enthusiastic about the food theme. Several mentioned tacos, burritos and empanadas as personal favorites. The HLA members explained that food is central to Hispanic culture because it acts as a powerful expression of identity, fosters community and family unity, and preserves and celebrates cultural heritage.
