Global Scholars Exchange Ideas with Ukrainian Peers

Rudy Brandl '83

Students from grades 10-12 enrolled in the Global Scholars Program engaged in a unique cross cultural exchange with students from Sokal, Ukraine on November 14 in the Center for Global Learning. Set up through a partnership with W+H alumnus Fernando Ramirez '77 and his organization Bridges 2030, the Global Scholars had the opportunity to learn about the lives of their Ukrainian peers during this difficult time for their country. Mr. Ramirez was accompanied by Tonia Student, a Ukrainian student at Columbia University who is the founder of Tomorrow by Together. She formed this nonprofit with the hope of empowering the next generation to make a difference in their communities in Ukraine.

Students in both locations prepared for the exchange by deciding what they wanted to learn from each other and brainstorming questions to prepare. The discussion began with an overview of each group and their respective locations. Students then took turns asking questions, with Ms. Student serving as translator.

“As we look to the future of both programs, we hope this will be the first of many virtual exchanges the two communities will have with each other,” said Mrs. Nicole Nolan, W+H Director of Global Programs and Community Outreach.
