Girls’ Tennis Team Highlights Exciting Fall Athletic Season

Rudy Brandl

Division championships are becoming a way of life for the W+H girls’ varsity tennis team. The Rams (14-1) rolled to their sixth consecutive GMC Blue Division championship with an undefeated record in the league and placed all seven starters on the All-GMC Blue team. Their only loss of the season came in the state tournament. Congratulations to veteran head coach Ron Haynes, who was named Coach of the Year, singles players Tanvi Yadav ’25, Amelie Leu ’25 and Chiara Baldi ’26, and doubles players CJ Strauss ’26, Kimberly Zhang ’27, Annie Yu ’25, Diya Kothari ’28 and Nijiany Genao '26.

Both W+H soccer teams also posted winning records and captured some dramatic victories along the way. The W+H boys (11-5) made two tournament runs, posting upset victories on the road to advance to the finals of the GMC Invitational Tournament and avenging a previous loss to Timothy Christian with an impressive 4-1 victory in the state tournament. The Rams were led by Adam Eisdorfer ’25, Cian Nicholls ’25, Al-Hammed Bell ’25, Sevastian Castillo ’26 and Justin Lustgarten ’26.

The W+H girls (9-4-1) also made some noise in the GMC Invitational Tournament, avenging two prior defeats with an electrifying 2-1 comeback victory over Colonia. Bianca Bellino ’25 and Rewa Gandhi ’27 scored goals in the second half to propel the Rams. Rewa’s game-winner came with just a few minutes remaining in regulation. Taylor Green ’26 was among the area’s top goal scorers with 24 goals to power the offense.

Ram runners achieved milestones and personal bests on a regular basis on cross country courses around the state this fall. Charlotte Szczubelek ’26 captured her third consecutive GMC Blue Division championship and later became the first W+H cross country athlete to qualify for the Meet of Champions when she finished ninth at the Non-Public state meet. Ryan Maciorowski ’26 ran consistently well all season, broke the 20-minute barrier and became the second fastest W+H male runner at the 5K distance.

The girls’ volleyball team (9-10) created its usual brand of excitement on the court, with more than half of its matches going the maximum three sets. A six-match win streak in late September and early October included four 2-1 victories.  Giannalise Rodriguez ’26, Rhea Thurumella ’25 and Elyssa Ortega ’26 led the Rams.
