The Upper School’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) continued its series of presentations in honor of Black History Month at Monday’s Upper School meeting. BSA members Jolie Paton ’28 and Madison Mitchell ’28 shared facts about famous Black figures in history, including Carter J. Woodson, W.E.B. DuBois, Rosa Parks and Thurgood Marshall. The BSA is sharing similar presentations with Middle School students and teachers at their weekly community meetings.
Fourth grade students are sharing facts about famous Black Americans during Lower School lunch in the AP Room. One of last week’s presentations featured Hallie Quinn Brown, an African American educator and activist who was the pioneer in the movement for African American women’s clubs in the United States and the main promoter of The Colored Women’s League in 1893.
Classroom activities also continued in the Lower School. Last week, Pre-K students learned about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. The young students also used different shapes to make their own spaceships.
All three W+H divisions will continue BHM activities throughout February, including more assemblies and some interactive presentations from BSA members to younger students.
