Alumni Awards Ceremony Honors Legacy, Excellence

Six outstanding individuals and two teams were honored at the Alumni Awards Ceremony at the conclusion of Fall Fair and Homecoming Day in the Berry Performing Arts Center. Congratulations to the 2025 Alumni Award winners: Distinguished Faculty Member Sandra Dreier,  Distinguished Alumni Rick Everett ’68 and Lisa Horwitz ’89, and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Coach John Chandler (posthumous), Bonnie Sermons ’79, Ken Kaye ’95, the 1975 football team and 1975 cross country team. The honorees, their families and friends, alumni and other members of the W+H community enjoyed a reception afterward in the AP Room.

Rudy Brandl ’83, Director of Communications and Publications, hosted the ceremony, which began with welcome remarks from Dr. Ayesha Sitlani, Board of Trustees President, and Dr. Corinna Crafton, Head of School. Athletic Director 

Mrs. Dreier taught fourth grade from 1989-2007. W+H alumnus Matt Darwin ’05  introduced Mrs. Dreier and presented her award. Mr. Brandl read introductory remarks from Linda O’Brien ’81 for Rick Everett, and Ken Horwitz ’90 made the presentation for his sister, Lisa Horwitz.

One coach, two athletes and two teams were inducted into the W+H Athletic Hall of Fame: John Chandler, a beloved teacher, coach and friend who worked at Wardlaw and W+H from 1961-1978, by alumnus and current Board of Trustees member Gil Childers ’73; Bonnie Sermons ’79, a three-sport standout, by her friend Lorraine Warren ’82; Ken Kaye ’95, a record-setting 3-point shooter and all-around athlete, by former W+H coach Joe McAuliffe; the 1975 football team, by Foster Bartko ’77; and the 1975 cross country team, by Geoff Drucker ’78. 

The event also included the presentation of the inaugural John Skolka ’78 Memorial Scholarship Awards to Ryan Maciorowski ’26 and Giannalise Rodriguez ’26. John Skolka, a remarkable athlete and leader, was inducted to the AHOF for a record fourth time. After being inducted as an individual in 2003, John was enshrined as a member of the 1977 football team, 1978 baseball team and 1975 football team. He passed away in September 2024 and his family has established a scholarship in his name. 

At the conclusion of the ceremony, all Athletic Hall of Fame inductees in attendance were invited to the stage to receive commemorative medals. Rudy Brandl, Chair of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, read all of the names and the Hall of Famers received an ovation as they gathered for a group photo.
