The Music Department at Wardlaw-Hartridge provides a wealth of experiences in active music making, from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Students sing, dance, play percussion instruments, study orchestra instruments and piano, use equipment on the cutting edge of music technology to orchestrate, arrange, compose music, and study the works of the master composers. They perform in orchestras, choirs, and select vocal and instrumental ensembles. As musicians and music educators who love children, we strive to share our love of our art and the joy and enrichment it can provide our students.
The benefits of our Wardlaw-Hartridge music education extend far beyond the aesthetic and the social. Through their musical study, students learn the value of practice, repetition, memorization, and the ability to recognize patterns. They learn to attend for extended periods of time, and develop an inner discipline that has a tremendous impact on their classroom studies and social relationships.
Recent scholarly findings support what we have seen through our years of anecdotal evidence: children’s participation in musical activities correlates with significant improvement in academic achievement. These findings confirm what we have long believed about the benefits of this carefully designed and creative program.
