International Family Fun Night Offered Array of Cultural Activities

The Wardlaw-Hartridge Parents' Association held one of its most popular events on the evening of Friday, January 22: International Family Fun Night. The evening was organized by Bonnie Nolan, the mother of Jimmy '12 and Billy '13, as well as other WHPA members.

Members of the school community gathered in the AP Room to participate in a plethora of multi-cultural activities and performances. Greek dancers from a local Greek Orthodox church performed, as well as Indianica, a dance group from Edison, which demonstrated several Indian folk dances. Afro-Brazilian martial arts was performed by Capoeira, and Zawadi African dancers played the African drum, danced and demonstrated snake-dancing. ESL teacher and current parent, Kelley Choi, had her Korean Fan Dance group entertain the crowd as well. DJ Mike Fernandez form LMNOP Rocks was also a performer.

Several student groups also joined in the fun. The Singh family (Gursimran '18) and friends performed an Indian folk dance, and Audrey Cheng '18 and friends led a Chinese Lion Dance. The evening concluded with a big Indian dance lesson instructed by Mega of NYC Bhangra Dance and Fitness.

A Chinese crafts table was managed by parents Lisa Cheng (Audrey '18) and Wenqing Feng (Jack Kolbert '20). There was also a table where guests could get Henna tattoos and another table featured a Dreidel game where children won jelly donuts and gold coins. Ean Plotkin, Middle School Latin teacher, ran his popular Latin Bingo game.

A delicious international buffet was served by members of the senior class, and Dipp'n Dots were also available for the tasting!

Valerie Raymonds, WHPA President, won the 50/50 raffle, and she donated her winnings to Direct Relief International (www.directrelief.org), which will benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti.
